The Brief
Local music legends Slim Setta approached me to make an album cover and pixel sprites for an online video game to promote their new track "Heatsink", a Aussie conscious rap track that touches on ideas of systemic oppression, Western Sydney life, and climate change.
Heatsinks are a passive computer component used to draw away power from components through a series of fins. Drawing on this, and the overall gamer message that was recurrent throughout the messaging of the song, we developed a CGI model of a giant CPU heatsink that sinks takes up an entire city, an interpretation of Sydney's cyberpunk future. The typeface was developed by Melbourne type designer Wei Huang, and then translated into 3D by myself. The static album art was then also turned into a visualiser for Spotify Canvas and YouTube.
The video game component drew inspiration from Maplestory, an early 2000s-2010s Korean MMORPG, with a distinct 8-bit anime style. The video game showed the musicians navigating across different villains across a scrolling Sydney train station.
