Exhibition Summary
"Ganglands" was a show held at Goodspace Gallery (The Lord Gladstone in Chippendale) in 2019 produced with works from myself. The show featured 3D generated renders of models made by myself. Inspired by Mark Leckey's "Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore", the show sought to poke fun at some cornerstones of the Sydney's "larrikinism" culture and their racial and cultural relevance. For example, the Nike Air Max Plus (TN) has become commonly associated with a specific subset of Sydney's cultural makeup, and is commonly associated with crime, lower socioeconomic background, and gang-like behaviour. Similarly, dragon sleeve tattoos and milk tea are commonly associated with negative stereotypes of the Vietnamese community. I was interested in how these items of fashion are used as identifiers within each scene to establish a co-opting of a lifestyle, and therefore implement status or power.
