The Brief
Off the back of collaborating with Anjunadeep for Qrion's release, I was approached by their trance-heavy partner label Anjunabeats to create some visuals for Jono Grant (of Above & Beyond fame) and Darren Tate's new venture, JODA, exploring an 80's synthwave sound. With some heavy hitting partnerships already under the label's belt in 2022, (Cercle, Explorations, ASOT), the label was looking to broaden their horizons by collaborating with MrSuicideSheep for the album release, a channel known for its atmospheric dubstep focus and its engagement with gamers and streamers. Therein lied the challenge:
The client asked to a CGI loop that touched on ideas of nostalgia and retro-futurism in the vein of the synth-wave album but not typically cyberpunk-ish. Additionally, the visuals needed to sit well with MrSuicideSheep's existing visualisers and video content, which was highly informed by anime, gaming content, and pixiv artists. The work needed to straddle the line between highly polished production that's become synonymous with the Anjunabeats label, yet approachable and organic enough to sit amongst MrSuicideSheep's indie label.
The end result was a moody, hazy setting of an abandoned "Sheepy" arcade coming back to life. The arcade is filled with smoky haze, and incandescent specks of neon green, blue and red flash intermittently. In the center of the room, the JODA arcade game flashes between screens, highlighting the producers, and the visualiser sequences that appeared on other singles throughout the release.
